Driving Alternative Solution For Aging Parents Who Can’t and Shouldn’t Drive
April 18, 2017, Calgary Alta. – As people age, the ability to drive a vehicle safely diminishes. According to Statistics Canada, older people have a higher accident rate per kilometer driven than any other age group. Driving isn’t always an option for the aging population.
Statistic Canada also suggests that inadequate access to transportation or difficulty getting around may be a barrier for seniors. Especially true for seniors, people need to get out and lead an active life and participate in social activities within their communities. This can be done through volunteering, attending social functions as well as being an active part of family activities.
These activities promote good health and successful aging. In addition to social activities, seniors rely on their vehicle for medical appointments and shopping necessities.
There comes a time when elderly parents should not drive for safety concerns. Having this conversation with aging parents is difficult though, as most feel their driver’s license is a sign of their independence. However, when we recognize the signs that elderly parents are unsafe driving, there are alternative means of transportation.
